What is Delta 9o?
Called Delta 9 THC-o-Acetate, this cannabinoid is similar in effect and chemical structure to Delta 9 THC. Delta 9 THCo, or simply Delta 9o or D9o, is practically the same cannabinoid as Delta 9 THC with the addition of an acetyl group that is eventually removed by the body, leaving pure delta 9 THC.
When consumed, it can take around 20 minutes for users to begin to feel the effects of D9o. This is because Delta 9o is first metabolized into Delta 9 THC by the liver before it is utilized by the body. The end result is a legal way to experience Delta 9 THC effects on the federal level.
All the Delta 9o used in any of 3CHI’s products is derived from hemp, which is legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. It’s also a federally legal cannabinoid for consumption. Delta 9 THC-o is a separate cannabinoid from Delta 9 THC. Delta 9o products contain under 0.3% Delta 9 THC by dry weight volume in all products. Once Delta 9o enters the body, the body then transforms it into Delta 9 THC.
How Does Delta 9o Work?
The only difference between Delta 9o and standard Delta 9 is an additional acetyl group on the molecule. Once the body metabolizes the acetate, Delta 9 THC is left over. So both will act the same. Delta 9o will create a Delta 9 THC molecule that interacts with the CB1 receptors, creating the psychoactive high associated with standard Delta 9 from marijuana. With that, Delta 9o can come with some of the same benefits, and potential side effects associated with Delta 9.
Will Delta 9o Get You High?
Because it is similar to Delta 9, Delta 9o will act the same in the body. The biggest difference is that Delta 9o needs to be metabolized in the body before the effects can be felt. The body breaks down the acetate, leaving behind Delta 9. This new form of Delta 9 will react inside your body similarly to standard Delta 9, if not more potently. It’s thought the body actually metabolizes D9o into a more bioavailable form of Delta 9, which is why some report Delta 9o as being as much as 3x stronger than standard Delta 9 THC.
Is Delta 9o Legal?
Yes. Delta 9o is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill as it is a hemp-derived product containing less than 0.3% delta 9 THC. In that piece of legislation, marijuana and hemp received separate definitions, even though they came from the same plant, the cannabis plant.
2018 Farm Bill
At the end of 2018, Congress approved the Hemp Improvement Act of 2018, better known as the 2018 Farm Bill. In this bill, hemp and marijuana, both derived from cannabis, received separate definitions for the first time in decades. First, industrial hemp was legalized on the federal level under the Farm Bill. For the cannabis plant to be defined as industrial hemp, the Delta 9 THC content must be less than 0.3% by dry weight volume. If the plant, and any products made from it, remain under that 0.3% Delta 9 THC, then the product is federally legal.
Anything with more than that 0.3% Delta 9 THC in it, whether it's the cannabis plant itself or a finished product, like an edible or a vape, is considered marijuana. Marijuana is federally illegal even though some states have legalized medical and recreational marijuana use.
What are the Effects of Delta 9o?
Once consumed and metabolized, Delta 9o creates a full body high similar to marijuana, where users may feel almost like a weight lifted off their shoulders and their muscles relaxing. They also feel a psychoactive effect in their brain that many have said feels like a giddy and carefree mood as well as relief from stress and aches.
THCO vs D9o
3CHI already sells a similar THCO vape product. What makes these new Delta 9o products different is the THCO that 3CHI currently sells is actually Delta 8 THCO, or Delta 8o. This creates a less intense experience, similar to how Delta 8 compares to Delta 9. Remember, 3CHI introduced Delta 8 to the hemp industry in 2019, just under a year after the 2018 Farm Bill legalized it across the country. Now, 3CHI is bringing Delta 9o to the forefront of the industry.
The biggest difference between Delta 8o and Delta 9o is, once again, that simple difference in a double bond along the molecule’s carbon chain. Delta 8o has a double bond on the eighth carbon whereas Delta 9o has its double bond on the ninth carbon. Both D8o and D9o have acetyl groups on them, which the body will naturally break down, leaving Delta 8 and Delta 9 behind respectively.
Delta 9o Testing Standards
Delta 9o and other related acetate products are typically made with a compound called acetic anhydride that needs to be tested for at the end of production. OSHA recommended safety levels are <5 ppm. It is very important that all D9o products meet these guidelines. All 3CHI Delta 9o products are verified in-house to be less than 5 ppm before being secondarily confirmed by an accredited third-party laboratory.
